married and maiden name travel dilemma

Options
Sorry - another random question I am looking for advice on:rolleyes:

I got married a few months ago, and although I have changed my name, I am yet to have my passport changed into my married name, but all my other documents have been (inc my driving licence).

When I fly later this year (Nov), I know I will have to book the tickets in my maiden name, so that they match my passport - but what about my travel insurance, European Health Insurance travel document etc?

Should I just book EVERYTHING in my maiden name or should I risk getting my passport changed in time???

thanks

    Hi there

As you said your tickets must match your passport. However your insurances can be in your married name.

Also as an aside, make sure both your insurance and your airline are happy to insure/carry you at however many weeks you will be when you travel.

    That's great - thanks Micjac.

Found an insurer who will carry me and the airline and my Doctor are both happy so good news all round. :D

Will take a copy of my marriage certificate too just in case I need it.

I was told that as long as I carried a certified copy of my marriage certificate in my passport then that would cover me for any name differences. I'm too tight to buy a new passport until it runs out so I've got another 7 years of this. As long as you remember to book all travel tickets in the same name as your passport then you'll be fine.

  • Hi, I have the same problem, i have booked Ryain air tickets to Dublin in my Married name and my passport is still in my maiden name. I don't have a driving licience and I am really worried they wont let me travel. I did call them and they said it should be ok with my marriage certificate but they wouldn't give me a absolute answer. Has anyone else ever done this to ireland?

Definitely book all tickets in the name on your passport. I've been told my travel companies that it was fine to book in my married name, and then been told by the check in morons that I had to buy a new (£300) ticket. They were so patronising and unpleasant, usual customer is always wrong attitude of many airport staff. Eventually made them ring their head office to sort it out, but not worth the hassle. Although they did it with very bad grace, sulky faces, and were even less impressed when I asked them to acknowledge that they had been wrong.

    Sorry little rant there.

I got my first passport to go on my honeymoon so had to get it in maiden name as they could not issue in married name until after I was married (as married on xmas eve and flying out on boxing day this was not possible so had to arrange it before wedding). As it cost a small fortune for the passport I was loathe to re-pay to get a new one once married and back from honeymoon so I used my maiden name passport along with a photocopy of my marriage certificate for the next ten years with it running out just last year. I never had a problem with flights to various european and usa destinations in all that time apart from one where I had lost the copy of my marriage certificate and that caused all sorts of hold-ups and problems but they eventually let me through. Just make sure you ALWAYS have a copy of your marriage certificate with the passport and you should be fine. Legally you can keep your maiden name after marriage anyway so you can book ticket in maiden name and use passport or book in married name and take copy of marriage certificate with you.

Virgin wont accept marriage/divorce certificates anymore
For security reasons it is absolutely essential that the name on your booking, ticket and passport are exactly the same.

If not, you will be unable to board the flight. This also applies to marriage or maiden names; we can no longer allow passengers to travel by accepting marriage certificates or decree absolutes in conjunction with a passport
  • Also remember if you use your credit card overseas and are asked for your passport to verify identity - names must match or you must take your marriage certificate for this as well. Remember there's so many docs you have to change when you get married!!!
