Living in a caravan full time

hi all i have posted a few times on here bout moving out and as yet am finding it incredibly hard to move out and would love to if i could. i used to live in a caravan many years ago in a mates back garden and enjoyed it apart from a few things more to do with the caravan itself rather than me as a person. i was wondering if anyone on here has or would live in a caravan full time??? what advice would you give me etc as i ve been offered to rent an 8 berth caravan all in extremely good state, gas, electricity, gas centralheating and private little garden all for £150 a month plus little bit for electricity and just wondered peoples opinions??? its handy as its 1 min away from work.

I would go for it! Cheap rent for a start. No neighbours.

I lived in one, many years ago, and I loved it. Got a bit cold in the winter but had a stove which kept the main room warm and one raditator which, unfortunately was not in the bedroom.. Lots of bedding required. Noise does travel a bit if you are too close to any other caravans, it can be a bit noisy. I know there is a rule now about how close you are allowed, 12' or something, but the further away the better. 8 berth, how big though? Some are crammed in a tiny space and beds are really settees.. Have you seen it? And you get a garden too... What more could you want? You could save up for your own place on the money you would save on rent.. Near to work as well, save a fortune on lunch!! Sounds fun.

I'd go for it at that price. Cheap as chips!

Just check if it's a holiday caravan or a proper mobile home. Holiday caravans don't have adequate insulation for winter/cold times.

I'd do it. Can be cold though in Winter but you get used to it. Will you have to leave before the summer?

As holiday caravans can be minimum £300 per WEEK, this does seem very, very reasonable, er cheap actually.

Hi, My Mum has lived in a caravan and yes it's cheap but it will get VERY cold. First thing in a morning until you've got up and switched the fire/heating on and then when you come home from being out and you have to wait for it to heat up again.

Consider also, the fact that it will not hold that much of your stuff. Where will you do your clothes washing and drying? Do you use the internet often at home - you'll need to consider whether you will be able to connect wirelessly for example. Where will you be on the electoral roll?

There's lots of little things to consider. That said, if you can sort out the main logistics like my Mum did, apart from the intense cold, she loved it. Hers too had it's own little garden but I know she never really felt like she had all of her privacy for some reason.

think long and hard about it then if you still want to do it

    Go for it!

Give it a go, and treat yourself to a electric blanket.
  • hi all many thanks for the replies.

well who i am gonna be renting it off is an old family friend so he is trying to do us and me a favour. i used to live in one many yrs ago and the cold was the only thing that got a little annoying but did get used to it though. well its on a old family friends farm yard type thing and have my own little enclosed garden as i said which i will be having a decking area and grass. plus i was thinking a wood burner stove or a gas fire??? to help heat up the caravan.

not sure how much electricity will cost me as at the moment its hooked up to his workshop and runs from there??? also it will be raised off the ground so will have to board it up to stop the wind getting underneath etc. also i wont change address as i ll keep getting post etc to mum's house as its a lot easier and they live bout 10 mins down the road. the internet one was the one that bothered me but i was able to find a mobile broadband from either o2 or someone for like £15-£25 a month and signal is meant to be good where i will be living also cycling to work will save me loads.

keep the advice etc coming as i have no doubt missed things out
