Ripping is the term usually used to describe the copying and compressing into a multitude of different audio formats. i.e. MP3, MP4, M4a, WMA, Gog Verbs, ACC (spit) and many more
see dBpowerAMP Music Converter (DC) for more information on an excellent converter which I have used for years.
Burning is the process of burning a CD which is obviously not required if the music is to be loaded onto most MP3 players.
