As an IFA yourself I am amazed at your patience being here. So many posters seem to have no understanding of the difference between your profession and Mr Lewis's "advice."
I have worked with my IFA for almost twenty years now. Usually one annual in-depth meeting is sufficient. He understands my attitude to Risk, my short, medium and long-term goals. And if I ever rang him up to say I was about to make an investment on the basis of something I had read in an Internet forum I'm sure he would fall off his chair! And then advise me to "come in for a chat."
Great though this site is and some of the money-saving tips are very useful, I have never considered it a place for serious Savings/Investment advice. Reading the posts on the Icesave debacle I have been amazed that so many people here do...0 -
Quite, nowt as stupid as folk that read something on-line, go for it without any other thought, and then blame that person, not themselves when it all goes wrong. No wonder this country is in such a mess. What an attitude people have.0

I use an IFA, and haven't yet had the b*llocks to tell him I was using Icesave as a short term account for some cash until I bought a new car next month. I feel a bit of a t*at.0

I think this site is a very useful place, it is an excellent way for us all to share our views and comments and I think many of us are more educated about financial affairs since we joined up but I don't think anyone here should be blamed for this Icesave fiasco, at the end of the day we all have to make our own minds up, even if you seek and pay for financial advice it is you who have to make the final decision.
Lets face it up until recently none of us could have predicted what has happened in the last few months especially sound banks going bust.
If you had a pain in your arm and visited a website for advice and the site advised you to cut your arm off would you do so, it's no different here, you read all the info then decide for yourself.
If I am completely honest; if 3 months ago my mother had asked me if it was safe to put her savings in Icesave I would have said yes (she didn't ask BTW), I would have been 100% wrong, I still trusted Icesave right up until Monday evening and I still feel a fool for doing so!0 -
Don't really think now is the time to be patting people on the back. Martin got his fingers burnt here but as he says in his blog, he did make sure the risks were thoroughly laid-out for readers.0

Totally agree with nilrem, some people have been blaming Martin and others some long standing members of this site, the actions and posts over the past few days have been shocking.
The only people to blame for Icesave were the bankers and the Icelandic government.
Even in the know local authorities took advice and saved huge deposits with them.0 -

and we are mere mortals not fit to converse with people so worldly as yourself ...

as a previous poster stated "oops a bit a sick came up reading your post"0 -

Thanks HW for being so crass and insulting. Reminds me why I don't come here much. You read something, totally misunderstand and/or misrepresent it, then insult the poster. Think I'll sign off :beer:0
