Saab 900 - my lights go on when I brake!

HI all,
I hope I find an expert for my problem.

My car is N reg Saab 900 and recently my brake light bulb went off so my husband changed it - but he only change the bulb and there are no cables uncovered. By coincidence that night was also very cold and my car was frosted in the morning (I am not sure whether that can have something to do with it).

Now my front lights go on (even though they are switched off) when I brake (how weird!) and according to dash board (where is the brake light bulb warning light) my brake lights are on when I drive.

Anyone knows how serious this could be?

I don't want to go to the garage as I am going to get new car on the new year so I don't want to spend fortune if it is big electric problem when I am going to be getting rid off that car.

Are you sure that when the bulb was replaced, that the correct bulb was used? The front lights are coming on because they are providing a path to earth though the brake light circuit. Remove the replaced bulb and this should stop, fit the correct bulb and all should be OK.

Ditto above, it's a wrong bulb fitted which caused this problem. I done this on one of my previous car and exactly the same thing happened.
  • sounds like you have sfitted a dual element bulb in a single element fitting or vice versa

take it out and put the correct bulb in

I had an N reg Saab and the brake light is a twin element bulb (Stop and Tail). Only the inner tail lights are single element.

    Thanks everyone,
My hubby went to Nationwide auto and had all of the bulbs in the car checked and my car now works like any other normal car!
    Back on the road again.
    xx
