EMA Problems

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7659374.stm

1. He is clearly not from a low income background.
2. He chose to go to school 7 miles away, his fault.
3. You need to buy books and stuff there? Look behind you mate.
4. OMG A JOB!? Who would have thought. When I was in sixth form, I got EMA for the first year, and had 2 jobs throughout sixth form. Lifes so tough isn't it... *sigh* (although saying that I am being a lazy bum at uni and haven't got a regular job!)

Now I belive EMA is good for those who actually need it, but he is just being a douchebag to be honest.

    1. You don't know if he is a low income family - looks can be deceiving!
    2. Maybe this was the only place that offered the subjects he was studying
    3. OK fair enough but when you have assignments due the next day the library isn't open at 11pm
    4. Def a possibility depending on work load
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos

You're being daft, he's obviously from a low income family; just because someone speaks nicely and is articulate doesn't mean there's money there! There are also many rural areas where people have to travel far further than this to get to school; not everybody lives in a town! Stop stereotyping people!

Quite! It is not uncommon around here for people to travel 7 miles to the local colleges. Closer to 20 for many in fact!

Plus the bus services in rural areas are nothing like town services, making it harder for people to stay late and use the library or whatever. Many villages have two services daily - one into town and one back out!
  • For goodness sake...when I was at college (and it wasn't that long ago!!) we didn't get EMA. We got jobs, or our parents had to find the money to help us.

It's really irritating me that people are whinging their !!!!!s off about it. Yes, you were expecting it and yes, you are entitled to it. But it isn't the end of the world if it hasn't come yet.

Others had to manage without it - so consider yourselves lucky you are getting it at all!!
I don't believe in doing things the easy way..... :)

Are you reading the same thread as me? :undecided

Because your answer doesn't seem to fit the OP!

There are other threads where your answer would fit but not this one...

Yes but he does... he said he lives inWarwick... not exactly a 'rural' area.

I just think they chose the wrong sort of person to interview.

He is complaining about having to get a job!

Yeh I got EMA but I don't believe in it. But obviously theres a time and a place.

I just don't think its right people complain about not recieving free money.

Well FWIW, I think 'free' or not, the public are right to expect a timely and efficient service from government departments and the private companies set up to provide government services.

The EMA c0ck up is costing current, and future tax payers, and therefore it is right that people complain and question what on earth is going on with this system.

It is a benefit put in place to help certain students and therefore they should deliver it as efficently as possible, or have a damn good reason why they are not. That is what we, the tax payers, should expect - nothing less!

Why do people assume it is ok for the government to mess people around, but not for any private company (unless of course they happen to have been contracted by the government  )??

I don't know of any company that gives out free money? If you do, feel free to PM because I could sure do with some

However I am a little confused as to why its screwed up now when its been working for years? Maybe they went from XP to Vista? Ha.

The seven miles is for one class. At my school if they didn't run the class it didn't run. They would try to organise something, but it rarely panned out. He should just accept that he can't do economics. Or choose a different sixth form where he can do economics alongside his other chosen subjects.

Also, why choose a college that doesn't offer all the courses you want, and makes you wear a suit that you will have to buy? Saying that, I believe Asda sell suits quite cheaply, Primark too probably.

He's lucky his parents can loan him money. I sure as hell know my parents wouldn't be able to. And buying books? Does the college not have a library?

Yes, a job is hard, but how many hours does he work? One shift would give him nearly the same amount as he would get for EMA.

EDIT: I will admit to being woefully ignorant on how the education system in England and Wales works. So if anything above is complete rubbish, please tell me.

    That wasn't my point Lokolo.

My point is, that company are being paid by taxpayers (ie you, me and the parents of many EMA students) to provide a service and they have failed, in this case, to do so efficiently.

Whether or not the money is 'free' is irrelevant - we should expect them to deliver when it is our taxes being used to fund the system.

It's not 'free' anyway - we all pay for it!!
