like someone said earlier, if you got 6 months mot left then wait until a month before your test runs out, take your old current mot with you uncase it does pass, you will get 13 months then, find out it it fails and how much it will cost, you then have a month to weight up the opitions and decide what to do. unless the car has wire hanging out of bald tyres and lumps of metal hanging of the car then you will be fine to use it until the mot runs out. mike

Talking of MOT's, is there anything wrong with having 2 running along side each other?

My car is knocking 10 years old and was thinking that, for the sake of £35, i 'might' get it MOT'ed every six months so if there is anything wrong i've got 6 months to fix them all.

that would seem a bit daft to me, as that would make the last mot vold, why pay £70+ a year on mot's when you dont need to, like a said eariler, you can mot your car up to a month before it runs outand as long as it passes and you have the old ticket with you then the mot tester can carry it on and give you 13 months.

why would it make the last MOT void?

It would not make the previous MOT void, as suggested get the car MOT'd early so if it does fail you have time to consider your options. The testing station can forward date your new certificate upto 28 days in advance.

my way of think is that for the sake of £35 i can have it checked for roadworthiness (if that's a word) every 6 months and keep on top of any repairs without finding out i need to spend x amount on repairs in 1 months pay packet. If it fails on this that and the other i've 6 months wage packets to sort everything out.
My MOT date is 7th January and last year i needed a new middle box for the exhaust knocking me back just short of £200 after a week of Christmas stink up's and a wage packet to last 5 weeks.

    SG,

There is nowt wrong with having your car tested early whenever you like so if you want it tested in June, then go for it. However if it fails, in order to stay legal you will need to have the work done. If you trust the garage let them do it, but it's something you can do yourself - then do it yourself. Try to get back for the retest (if you are offered a free retest). If the retest is not free and you have had the work done by some other garage or yourself, then you know the car is again roadworthy and there is no need to have retest, because your current MOT is still valid.

But if you want your MOT moved away from January you might want to go ahead and get it re tested so your new MOT will expire in June 2007 and if nothing else it's warmer and more pleasant time of year.
