If you are really worried about where your money is invested then look for ethical banks like the co-op or UK building societies who don't do much except take in savings and lend it out as mortgages.

You could also look at national savings or northern rock where your money helps fund the UK government.
    R.

This is exactly what I have done – my money is split between afore-mentioned type of building society, Nationwide and NS&I.

I have always avoided putting money in any foreign bank, no matter how high the interest.

I also simply cannot bring myself to put anything into the large banks with shareholders who are being given handouts of taxpayers' money after their abysmal, reckless behaviour and the appalling greed they practised with their bonuses during the last few years.

I agree - never been a better time to buy British.

However would the likes of B & B, Abbey & A & L come under 'supporting UK institutions' now that they are under Santander umbrella?

    No!!!!!!!!

  • The French Bank BNP Paribas is now regarded as the strongest European retail savings bank since it bought Fortis retail deposits..
