  • almost exactly the amount the depositors need back.. nice work

well, the icesave customers anyway, not nescecelery the local councils - it turns out my local council has about £50 million in icelandic banks, and from what I've read, that seems fairly typical all over the Uk

Snooping powers under anti terrorism laws have also been used to catch people whose dogs foul the footpaths I understand. Interesting article though and I am glad the authorities were on the ball.

The point is it is illegal, they are not terrorists by any stretch of the imagination, therefore the gov has acted unlawfully. They are using the laws illegally to oppress people who are not terrorists. Terrorism is being used to take ordinary people rights away which is a dangerous step.

I don't think it is illegal, rather inappropriate. Notwithstanding that, I would back its use if it saves the UK taxpayer billions.

Iceland by all accounts broke the law when they claimed they had no intention of honouring the compensation scheme. That in itself is enough justification to seize the assets of the UK entity, and perhaps the terrorist laws were just the quickest way to achieve that goal.

    Easiest and quickest and illegal.
Prehaps is they had been monitoring the activities of the banks rather than money laundering then we woulnd not be in this mess?
The fact that terroists can operate on a shoe string seems to have passed them by.
I have been treated as a terrorist by the banks myself, they would not let me withdraw £20 to close and old account becasue my passport was out of date!!

    They still have it!! :rotfl:

Obviously need it more than I do!! :rotfl:

It's a great example of why anti-terrorism laws need to be carefully drafted and scrutinised. The one thing we can be sure of is that they always giver government more power.

The actual act is "Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act", so is being used for financial security of the country. This is not the first - nor the last - that such laws are not perhaps used for exactly what they were designed for..

Anyway I'm sure some people would say they were "terrified" of loosing their money and the Icelandic governments behavior.
