It seems that Nationwide Building Society and the Co-operative Bank are considered to be the 'safest' independent U.K. organisations to deposit your money with at the moment... Northern Rock will also be extremely safe since it is has been under Government ownership for a year or so now, but I think the bank is currently the amount of cash you can deposit wit them as a new saver (?)

Stick it in NS&I; For real peace of mind for 5 years try the 5 year rate linked account. This pays around 1% above inflation for 5 years.
So, it's 100% protected (by way of being treasury backed) and your savings are free from inflation.
Oh, and it's also tax free.0
