Windows Explorer keeps changing my “view”

I run XP and, in Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) I like to view “details” rather than “thumbnails” “icons” or any of the other options.
I want every folder to open with details in the right hand pane. I want to see “Name”, “Size” Type” “Date Modified” etc.
My laptop has done this happily for years but recently my laptop has decided that it wants to show “icons” only instead of “details”.
I’ve tried fixing it numerous times but it keeps reverting to “icons” only every time I reboot.
If I set the “view” to “details” as I want it, then open “tools”, “folder options”, “view” and select “apply to all folders”, it reverts to “details” for all my folders but reverts back to icons every time I reboot.
It is a minor problem but it is driving me crazy.
How can I force the PC to always show the details in every folder I open in Explorer?
Surely my above method is correct. It is what I have successfully done in the past.
Is there a trick with the registry that will work?
Thank you.
