I'd just forget it and reply to any replies you get back from the scammers emails with "I'm sorry but we have gone bankrupt"

Sounds like some sort of virus. The wife's Hotmail account sent a junk e-mail to each of her contacts with a similar message.Hoping this year is better than the last.

to double check , do the following and then start a thread on the techie part of the forum if it findd anything
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

I had something similar to this..an email entitled "dear friend" went to all my contacts in hotmail, happened a couple of times until I changed my pass word,
have you ever signed up to one of those sites that tell you who has blocked you from hotmail etc apparently this is the site it originates from hth0 -
Assuming you can see where the emails have gone I personally would email all these people saying that these are scan emails and if the only way they can get business is hacking into email accounts then they should be given a wide berth! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

All my contacts once got sent a message similar to the one above.....but from my dad!!!!
Not sure how it happened but I think my dad got a virus that used my email contacts list and sent out dodgy links to all my friends from his account. It was quite funny as it made my dad look a bit dodgy and desperate for business.... however I don't think certain people found it funny!0 -

The exact same thing happened to me. The same spam was inserted. Full version of hotmail turned to classic and vacation mode. It happened at 1635 yesterday.
I have checked my computer for all the usual. I found nothing. The account was hacked for certain, not a header forgery.
Luckily I keep that address mainly for Spam. I do worry about whether folders etc were synchronised and downloaded somewhere.
I have apologised to anyone sent this spam mail.
I have, with great difficulty sent a complaint to hotmail and I am currently waiting a reply.
If there is any coincidence a few weeks ago I had at least three attempts by someone trying to reset my password.
Keep changing your password to a strong one. My research leads me to believe that this sort of thing cannot be totally prevented.
It would be interesting to find out how many hundreds or thousands of people were affected by the same thing.
I have not clicked on the website in the spam incase it tries to download something.0 -

I received a reply from windows live technical support about ten minutes ago. They were the only people I could seem to contact. They will, as in the past, forward to hotmail support for a further reply.
If you have anti virus and spyware detectors, then run them for peace of mind. Lots are available free from the internet or maybe even your service provider, if you have broadband.
I am confident that in most circumstances, nothing untoward will show up. It is just a fact of life that ANY web based service is prone to attack at any time.0
