Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I won, I won, I won!
will be useful for university fees etc when they get older.
  • Having worked in the industry for one of the biggest worldwide agencies - NEVER ever pay any money upfront. A good agency will be sure you will get work, having said that, nothing is for free and any photos, books, courier charges does come out of your money earned - as does the agency fee. Don't expect to get paid much unless you hit the big time with a huge contract with usage - it really does not pay a great deal to be honest unless you have a superbaby that everyone wants and there are very few of them and this is why you seen the same children over and over again in magazines and on TV. I used to work in the accounts department of this agency so I have seen the whole money aspect side as well as everything else. You will have to pay all your own expenses to get to castings and this can soon mount up. Some work pays as little as £30 and you have to pay an agency fee as well as other expenses. Many of the girls are in debt for the whole of their working time (it is not a career!)

In regard to the person asking about usage, it really does vary. It does depend on what company your baby will be on the nappy package for and whether you have been paid already. PM me if you want to be more personal and I'll see if I can help more, especially if you want to give more details, I used to deal with this aspect as well. Some people can get paid thoughsands, others get paid a one off fee for a few hundred. You usually cannot negotiate much as there is always someone waiting to have theirs done instead if you say no so please do't think this will pay your mortgage. It won't - I will be honest with you.

If you want to get details of the REPUTABLE agencies then you need a copy of the 'Red Pages' which is an industry book, it does cost around £150 but worth it if it ensures you are not going to get ripped off along the way.

ANYONE can set up a model agency but not all can guarentee work (think Billy on EastEnders!!). Go for one that asks for no money at all (Tots2Teens used to be the best in the business) but ask to see other childrens portfolios on your visit, the agency should have these and they should not charge you for an appointment either. Don't sick with just seeing picturesa and cards on a wall, they should have a professional portfolio which will have the agencies name on the front and pictures of the kids that have actually been in magazines, adverts, ect.. not just photographs. If your child is going make them money then they will see you for free and invest their initial time in getting you started. Anything else is a load of rubbish and not be touched with a bargepole. The problem in this industry is that there are plenty of people wanting to take your money for nothing and it is not regulated, I could set one up tomorrow, it is shocking really.

On a more moral note though.... having seen what a lot of these models go through first hand (we had young and older girls, not babies though) I would wait until they were old enough to make their own desicions.... there is a lot of treking around to castings and waiting around with no certainty that they will get the job, make the most of your children while they are little instead of getting stressed over whether they are better than the next kid. It also makes children very, very insecure and damages their (and yours) self esteem if they are constantly rejected at castings. If your child has that 'something special' they are better of being sent to stageschool where the majority of the children in adverts come from. It not all about how pretty they look but their personality as well. Just my personal opinion having seen it first hand - plus the binge eating, drugs, being told you need lipo because you are a size 10 not 8, the list really is endless so think that this is what you want for your child and not for you because it is a very degrading industry to get into unless you are THE next top supermodel (or child model!!)!! (nagging over - sorry, had to be honest)

  • Stop trying to make money out of your kids!!
Instead of pushing them into photo shoots take them to a park or something and let them be the children that they are. :T
They will grow up fast enough as it is and then if they 'choose' to be models and have the ability ....... they will. :D

Firstly, I don't make money out of my son, it actually costs me to get him places, the cheques are made payable to him & go into his bank account. Perhaps you've been watching too much Shameless.

Secondly, although people have always said, since he was a baby that I should have put him in for modelling I never did, he is now 12 years old & decided himself that he wanted to do it, should I say no? It's not like he's asking can he do drugs.

Thirdly, although I lose out money wise, my son makes money which he saves & feels proud of himself for. He probably earns more an hour than you do.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D
  • Firstly, seeing as your Son is 12 my comments obviously do not apply to you. I have no idea what Shameless is (but you seem to?). Perhaps you've been watching too much 'pushy parents'!

Secondly, He's made up his own mind that's good. so don't take offence!

Thirdly, Good for him! He probably does make more money per hour than I do.
I'm secure enough not to need to go around bragging how much I do or don't earn though. There is a lot of people out there who make more money than me and your Son ........... so your point is ????

The point is don't assume that kids do modelling cos they are being pushed into it & hating it & it's taking up their play time & they don't have a normal kids life etc

Another point is that it's the kids who make the money not the parents.

As for 'pushy parent', if anything it's a pain in the !!!!!! getting him to places, I don't drive & never know where anything is, it's usually only Manchester but I'd never been there in my life & didn't know where I was going. So, it would be far easier for me to say no.

As I said, he's making some money for himself which isn't a bad thing as then he'll have to learn to budget if he wants to buy anything, a lot of kids have a paper round to earn a bit of money which is also good, I personally don't let mine as I'd be too worried.

    Hi
