Question About Bulbs

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but not sure where to put it...

Lightbulbs....

I have a tableside lamp, which will take a 60W GLS bulb

Would it be safe to put in an energy saving bulb as long as it is no more than the maximum wattage and is the correct ES fitting?

Lamp says max 60w GLS bulb, I have 11w (= to 60w) energy saving bulb I wish to use.

May sound a silly question, but I wish to ask before blowing myself up

Thanks :o

  • You'll be OK with an 11W energy saving bulb because they give off a lot less heat. A 100W GLS bulb would generate enough heat to melt a lampshade rated at 60W. Keep cool!

perfectly safe, as the prev poster stated the limitations on lamp wattage in fittings is pureley due to the heat produced being excessive, energy style lamps produce only a fraction of the heat so there is no real limit you can go up to the 150W equivalent if desired.

When I was an apprentice I used to get whacked with a length of conduit if I called them bulbs - "bulbs grow in the ground and you get tulips from them, electricians use lamps" - oh what wits they were lol lol

My experience is that an 11W energy saver is not as bright as a 60W tungsten. I use 15W. This would still be OK of course.

fatnbald: I thought the lamp was the fitting into which you put the bulb. I was always taught to call them lamp bulbs but these days people always seem to call them light bulbs, probably to differentiate them from heavy bulbs!

    Thanks folks.

I felt silly asking, as I thought there was going to be an obvious answer :o

They are cooler and I feel safer. I have a fear of 'bulbs' as one exploded on me once, so anything that lasts longer, thus less chance of 'blowing' is better for me

Tried the 11w and it's plenty bright for me. It's only for when I use the PC rather than the main light as my living room is covered by a big tree, so need light earlier so can see the keyboard, even when it's not that dark outside that I need turn the main light on and shut the curtains :rotfl:

    Cheers!

I have another question. I apologise in advance as it sounds silly...

If I have exactly the same type and same wattage bulb in both my desk lamp and my main living room light (normal on/off switch, no dimmer), would they both use the same amount of electricity, or could the lamp be cheaper?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Same price.

Incidentally, you must not use dimmer switches with energy saving bulbs as they are not suitable for dimming and will flicker and burn if you do use them. There are special dimmable energy saving bulbs available, but they cost much more than conventional energy savers.

Here is a link to enrgy saving dimmable bulbs:

  • something in the news yesterday about eco bulbs but should be ok if keep it at least 30cm away from you because they emit unsafe amounts of radiation.
