The "I got out of jail" on Icesave thread...

Although I can argue that a decent chunk of the money was trapped 'between accounts' that doesn't take away from the fact that I was utterly, utterly stupid to have believed the "we're sound" bullsh!t from Landsbanki/Icesave, and was staring down the barrel of financial ruin as a result of yesterday's events.

So screw any concerns about whether I'll pick up that extra day or so's interest when this is all unwound, every one of us who had more than the magic £50K limit with those lying b@st@ds should all be grateful for eternity that our government has got us out of jail.

Assuming my savings do eventually get back to me, the first thing I'm going to do is give £1,000 of it to charity, preferably one of Alistair Darling's choice.

Everyone else in the same boat should also celebrate their good fortune in the same way, I reckon.....

Agreed, although there was little the Chancellor could do.

Saying to 330,00 Icesave customers that they would lose out would have been political suicide and set a precedent that no-one's savings are safe. If a major bank failed/fails and the Govt don't bail out the savers, there would be runs on all banks swiftly followed by riots and the breakdown of law and order.

But top marks to the Govt for doing the right thing!

Yep very lucky the limit was raised to 50k on the same day it all went tits up!!

I still can't believe all those people on the thread saying everything was fine, and not to panic.

    Hear hear.

I almost cried with relief this morning. I have money in Icesave under the £16k limit and was terrified that it was all gone. Pretty disappointing to learn the guarantee you think keeps your money save, ain't worth a thing.

I am so, so grateful for the govt for stepping up and protecting people who worked so hard for their money and put it in a bank in good faith, thinking it was safe.

    Thank you Alastair!

Well done, people, glad to see this situation will eventually have a happy ending, also glad to see you are giving credit where it's REALLY due.

although there was little the Chancellor could do.
no, ebyard, not entirely true. An obscure, foreign internet banking failure is VERY different to a major UK bank failure with queues along the High Street.

The government could have stuck to the rules on this one. Thank your lucky stars they didn't

but, people, please, when you see others in the forum posting contrary views to the 'fan club', don't call them lemmings, doomsters or scare-mongers,
after all .... they just might be right ... AGAIN ;)

Have a look at the Kaupthing Edge website, they are still proudly proclaiming they are a safe and secure bank with high credit ratings, despite having gone into default this morning.

Unbelievable isn't it. Just like the CEO of Icesave gave a press release late on Monday afternoon, everything's fine, we're a strong, stable bank, we're still accepting deposits, blah, blah.

    Surely that's fraud!

I put any change I get that's <50p into the children in need box or whatever at shops.
That will do me for helping the needy.
I'll be keeping all my hard earned money, and I'll be greatful to darling for getting it back. Even though he should have prevented this from happening in the first place.

I gave about £50 of it away just now down my local to my fellow non-workers. I guess that counts as charity these days

How should the Chancellor have prevented you from putting your money in an Icelandic bank?
