"The Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir H. Haarde, has just concluded a press conference in which he said that the government remains intent on working out a “mutually agreeable” solution to the issue of compensating savers with Icesave accounts in the UK.

The PM said he and his government will do all they can to retain close and friendly relations with Iceland’s close ally, the United Kingdom.

The British government has promised to reimburse all Icesave customers’ savings in full regardless of if the Icelandic government reneges on its responsibility to insure the first EUR 20,000. The damage that would do to Iceland’s international reputation could be considerable however, and the PM has reiterated his desire not to go down that route.

Maybe I'm being overly cynical, but it sounds like there's a great opportunity for backpedalling here. Sounds to me like this "amicably sorting out a deal" malarkey could benefit both governments if it took a few decades to complete - no inconvenient payouts needed from HM Government or Iceland until they 'agree' something.

At least that fatuous b*ll*cks George Osborne isn't involved in the negotiation ...

Yes, years ago, over cod and they won then as well.

Sounds like a big climbdown by the Icelandic PM compared to what Darling reported him as saying yesterday.

If I'd had money in Icesave I would actually be extremely grateful to our present government and I never thought I'd say that - let alone put it in print. I'm sure it will come back to haunt me at some point but for now credit where credit's due (no pun intended).

i just watched his interview on BBC website...what a cope out. But then again he is as powerful as the mayor of Bristol.
