New £50,000 guarantee meaningless?
Marvo
I ask if the new £50,000 guarantee is meaningless, in that the UK gov't has pledged to not let ANY uk depositor lose his/her deposit WHATEVER the amount.
What I read from Mr B. and Mr D. is that I can put £100,000 in any of the "backed" UK banks and still be able to sleep at night.
What do other people reckon?

Darling was pushed about this in interviews this morning and he refused to say if the over £50K guarantee would apply to any other bank that goes under. It's not totally clear, but I'm taking that as a sign it probably won't! The comments about not letting any depositer lose any of their money applied to Icesave only.
Best not take the risk, split it around UK-based banks and keep the total under £50k. That's the message I'm getting from all this!0
