I need to find out how safe my savings are in ING -- How much should I have in the saving account as a max. What is the most reliable account I should transfer money into?

Who can say what is safe? Only those at the very top of the banking system know. We are just pawns in a much bigger game. Not even Martin really knows the nitty gritty.
It is a personal decision. Me? I've just pulled all my money out of ING (about £13k). Kept £1 in just in case I ever want to put money back in... but can't see that happening for a good long while.
Effectively with ING, your savings (up to about £77k) are covered only by the Dutch compensation scheme.0
