Automatic renewal after car was written off last year!

Hi I don't know if anyone knows where i stand with this but last year my husband wrote off his car the insurance paid out and the car was taken away ( all done via insurance) We tried to see if we could move the insurance into my name for my car but we couldn't and it was left on our understanding the insurance was cancelled.

Then in sept the post office insurance took £368 from my credit card. I noticed a month later and called them to refund the money. They so far have only agreed to refund £222 as the insurance is cancelled from the date i called and they will check there records to see if the insurance was cancelled. For a start the proportion i am getting back after a month is ridiculas and secondly the car was written of you took it away how can you possibly renew the policy.

Does anyone know where i stand they just dont seem to be getting my point of view.

Do you have anything detailing the accident from them last year, letters, settlement figures, documents detailing the removal of the vehicle etc etc

Also documents sent this year giving you the premium, and notification that they would be taking the money? If not, ask them when they sent it, and how?

ask them what they quoted for as a renewal? Effectively they have quoted for a vehicle that you don't own (which they know), and probably doesn't exist anymore (which they should know)

Therefore the renewal is invalid, and as a result the payment is invalid.

I think you may need to write to them to make your case clear.
If they continue to mess you around, simply call the credit card provider. They are jointly and severably liable for this, and will have to re-imburse you if Post Office won't.

Best of luck, be patient, but don't stop your momentum, you are in the right.

That's ridiculous. Ask to speak to a line manager, get them to look at the history of the policy and agree that the insured vehicle was written off and a total loss payment had been made.

Renewal under these circumastances makes no sense, and insist on an immediate full refund. The ombudsman (free appeal service) is there to back you up if they don't agree.
  • Thank you,

We have moved address so the renewal is likely to have gone there. I couldn't believe there cheek when I called them its good to know im not the only one who thinks is ludicrous.
