Car Insurance for car on driveway

I would appreciate it if someone could give me some advice on the following.

My daughter has not yet passed her driving test (she is very close to doing so) but for her 18th birthday last week the family all chipped in and we got her a small car at a reasonable price from my brother.

The car for the time being will be sat on our driveway until she passes her test and will not be driven on the road by anyone, it will just sit there.

Is there anyway she or I can insure it just to get it covered in case anybody steals it or it get broken in to etc. Obviously she is not going to cause any harm or damage to any person or any property but it seems wrong that the only way she can do this (we have been told so far) is 3rd party fire and theft.

Is there any way I can cover it on my house and contents insurance or some other method?

Many Thanks
Andy

Very much doubt you could cover a car on a house policy.

So Car Insurance will be needed for it, and the min. cover available is generally third party only.

Min Theft cover would be third party, fire & theft - don' think anyone will cover against (fire+) theft only.

    Not exactly true.

You can buy insurance called "LUFT", which means Laid Up Fire & Theft cover.

It's mainly used for commercial vehicles, IE Forklifts, plant vehicles which don't actually go on the road. Or don't have a registration, or a need to BE registered.

It's worth investigating that, but I fear it may only be for commercial insurance via an insurance broker.

Also, If the car is laid up, it'd be pointless insuring it in her name, as it'll only effect her full insurance when she takes the car out on a full policy once she passes.

So putting it in your name is the best option. If you're unable to get personal LUFT cover on the car. Just insured it in your name, under TPFT, tell the insurance, you're not physically driving the car and set your mileage to NIL.

If that doesn't come to anything, try Norwich Union PAYD ( Pay as you drive ) insurance. It's insurance that charges you by the mile you drive. So having TPFT cover, on a mileage basis, should be practically nothing.

    Hope this helps.

You can definately get LUFT for personal cars. Well, you certainly used to be able to, it's been a while.

Is the car worth a lot of money / you're in a high risk area?

It might just be cost effective to remove the battery and stick a steering wheel lock on it (or remove the steering wheel).

If you go down the insruacne route, definately a phone call to your local broker. It doesn't cost much at all. I think I paid about 50quid for a years worth on a highly modified car.

The commonly available laid-up policies for private cars generally insist on the vehicle being garaged. Find a broker who will probably be able to sort you out. Or just insure it TPFT.

Shooks, should have known that working for NU Claims shouldn't i?

We're not using the new policy format for NUD, so still getting the HPI and PAYD policy claims.
