I hate my job

I had a fantastit plan to pay off all my debts by June next year (working a second job to top up my income and paying as much as I could off every month) but I hate my 9-5 job.

I'm really enjoying me second job, and sometimes i notice myself smiling while I'm doing it (something I've never experienced at work before) which just makes me realise even more how much I hate my 9-5 job.

Trouble is if I quit before getting another job then I may end up being out of work for a period, which would ruin my debt free plan. Also, if I start another job, I would probably finish too late to get to my second job so would have to give that up. I'm on £15,600 in my main job, with my second job my income is closer to between 22k & 24k, so if I were to start something else I'd need a pay rise that covers this if i can't do my second job.

I really don't know if I can carry on with this until June next year. Working 70 hours a week is killing me and I find I'm just permanantly stressed and feel like I exist just to work, nothing else. I may get one evening a week free to myself if I'm lucky. This is no sort of life. There just seems to be no reason for being here anymore!!!

How can I dig myself out of this hole? I just want a job that rewards me for the amount of effort I put in. But everything I see is even less money than I'm on now. How does anybody get a job on mre than 16-18k?

I have 9 GCSEs and college and uni qualifications too (BTEC ND & BTEC HND)

Why am I getting nowhere? I worked 2 jobs while I was at college/uni full time so when I left I could get a good job. I thought 70 hour weeks were behind me. As it turns out life has got no better. Is it just the current credit climate?
This is WAY more fun than monopoly.

Aww. I think that it is a difficult time right now. I think you have to make a decision to stick with it if you can until June.

If you really can't stick with it then just keep the main job on for now. you may not hate it so much if you have more relaxation time. Maybe you could up your income from other sources (ebay?) and concentrate on learning more about budgeting to make the most of your money?

    Keep positive.

it's really down to you - you can make adjustments so the payments take longer, or just stick at it. Think of it a week at a time - a week seems to go so quickly! :)

Hi, hope you don't mind me joining in. I'm a big time lurker and small time poster on this site. I'm replying because your situation sounds very much like mine - in fact probably pretty much identical. Do you mind telling us what your two jobs are? Are they both secure i.e. permanent contracts, self employed, freelance etc. Any other details to take into account, e.g. family, partner income etc. Let us know and i'll have a little ponder. Take care

Dare not even add up my debts yet - sorry - i'm a wuss i know.
LBM - anticipated within next hour or so.
  • I was in that situation for a while. What happened for me was I applied for a better job within one of the companies I was working for which after I did a bit of overtime came out at roughly the same as my previous combined jobs.

Is there no way of expanding what you're doing in the job you enjoy? Might be worth having a word with your boss.

    Hiya honey,

I like all of my jobs but I don't exactly *love* any of them! My favourite is probably the restaurant, but I wouldn't want to do it for 70 hours a week.

They all have their downsides as well as things I like about them - and their main upside to me is the money, and the flexibility. (I can work more hours to earn more money if I wish - or less if I need to.)

How I deal with the killing hours, the lack of social life and general exhaustion is by setting parameters and targets and focussing on the positives. (i.e. how much faster our debts are being paid off.)

I tell myself I'll do this for 3 months, pay off another x amount of debt (I work out exactly how much it's likely to be) and then I'll review it. If I don't want to carry on this way then I'l have a rethink.

Every 3 month review until now I have decided that the "gain" outweighs the "pain" and soldiered on, but this time I decided to dial it down a little bit and just accept that i will be paying the debts off more slowly.

After a while I'm pretty sure that this wil get to me and I'll feel the need to rev it up a gear again to speed up the process. :o

Maybe you could tell yourself that you'll carry on this way until Christmas, whilst also looking for other possibilities, and then you'll try something else.

Have you got any holiday left that you could use to take the pressure off a bit whilst still getting paid? That helps me.

I had a few days off from my main two jobs recently and I have some more "total" holiday booked for half term week then I'm taking a days holiday a week from my day job until Christmas to allow me to increase my eBay hours and second job hours without half killing myself.

(It's amazing how paid holiday accumulates when you don't go on holidays! ;) )

I've rambled on a lot my sweet, but I don't really know what the solution is. I love that you found yourself smiling at work and were astonished though! That's awesome. :D

    Love Jacks xxx :D

  • I think this is a classic case of how debt can get in the way of people achieving their dreams. Knuckle down and pay it off and then you will be free to explore all the employment options open to you, or even go back to college.

Tough it out for a few months and hopefully the progress you have made will motivate you to continue.

I think that's what I'd try hard to do. If you're loving it, then why not go for more of it.

Failing that, can you not take a few days off, have a bit of R & R time and enjoy some walks, fresh air, a visit to the sea - even on a rough day can be great? If you have to stick with what you have then - really - 9 months to clear your debts really isn't that long and you'll be so thankful come the end of June.

For now, look around and see what else is open to you. Good luck, especially with getting the money paid off,

  • I had to write to say you're not alone. About seven years ago I was in the same position, working anything up to 100 hours a week (though normally 75+ hours). My main job was dull, but manageable. The evening job was very hard, but I needed the cash to pay off debts left from the breakup of my relationship. I did end up in tears towards the end of the debt repayment period - I was exhausted, so be careful that you look after your health too.

Is there anyway you can plan to reduce the hours at one of the jobs - just so that you feel you're in control of your life a bit more yet still paying off debts?

I did manage to get debt free within two years. It was very, very tough and I so wish that MSE was around then (if it was I didn't know about it). Use this site to get ideas and let off steam.

I now work part-time, I'm studying for a degree and have a volunteer job that I adore. I can be there for family and friends like I've never been able to be in the past. I've a LOT of money in savings and I've just started up a new freelance business... and that's all been possible because of clearing the debt.

That's my experience. I wanted to share so that you have some hope for the future for yourself.

    Best wishes,
    Hip (who should be studying)!
