iphone - is it THAT good!?

My contracts up for renewal with O2 at the end of the year and am toying with the idea of getting an iphone. To get it for free I have to go on their £45 traiff which give me 1200mins and 500 texts which is fine. My question is, is the iphone as good as everyone makes out?? I've already got an ipod touch. I also have a couple of questions:
  1. Does 3g mean I can brows the internet anywhere even if I'm not in a WiFi hotspot??
  2. Does the iphone have that horrible silver back that scratches as soon as you take it out of the box or is it something more durable??

No it isn't. It's an iPod Touch with a 3G phone built in. HOWEVER there are lots of security issues with it and there's been a lot of issues with poor signal and call dropping.

as an iPhone user, i can probably give you some good useful comments...

I like the iPhone, is it really easy to use.. now if you've used an iPod Touch already, it'll be like second nature to you..

Depends on what part of the UK you are in, depends on how good your 3G coverage is... major cities etc, are great.. however, some cities are actually meshed wireless networks, and all your wifi hotspots (the cloud / btopenzone) once you register once with them, it will automatically pick you up and log you in, and you have wifi browsing..

not as easy as a laptop, but hell of a lot more portable..

the iPhone has a full plastic back. I have the 16gb White, and there are a few scratches, with using it, but the screen is still pristine!

now, onto the other things people have said... security issues, what doesn't have security issues.. nokia and sony ericssons are renowned for bugs, and no software updates, whereas apple will keep releasing new software for the phone! started on v2.0 when the phone was released, and now we're on 2.1... with another version due, to give more features, such as push notification..

Personally, i think Conor should design an operating system to run on a phone without a single bug, and then see how difficult things can be..

me.. i do like my iphone, syncs with calendar and exchange for work, my own emails come through to the phones, and again push, if you have mobile me.... (i use mobile me for my contacts!) and battery life is good enough for a day without running out at 2pm, like my N95 used to...

as for call dropping, the new software doesn't have that issue, so Conor is living in August when it was a slight issue, if you were in a weak signal area.. (and orange just drops calls for the sake of it i find... but that is a different matter)

wow.. long post.... hope that helps

i absolutly love my iphone, the one thing i wish it did have is full bluetooth so i can send pictures and files between phones and not jsut bluetooth that only connects to a handsfree headset :( since the last update 2.10 ive had tons better signal strength and ive never had a dropped call ever. ive only had mine about 3-4 weeks though but i love my iphone and using the internet on it on the 3G network is brilliant as it allows me to do things i would miss. i.e. update facebook, etc, etc :)

I don't miss the whole bluetoothing photos around, as i rarely did it anyway... if i need to send a photo, I can either upload it to my mobileme gallery, or just email it to someone, as everyone i know has email...

Is this true of the new one too? Can you not connect to other phones?
What about connection with a Mac?

you have full synchronisation with a USB cable to both PC and MAC.. you can sync

    Contacts
    Calendars
    Photos
    Music
    Video

    all via the iTunes interface.

Bluetooth is for bluetooth headset only..

with the app store, you can get something called AirSharing, this makes your iPhone a wireless hard drive, you connect to it via your computer, and you can drag and drop files between it... great software..

    however, bluetooth is headset only...

bluetooth does work with other headsets not just apples, i've had my 1st gen and my 3g iphone hooked up to sony ericsson, a car kit from BMW, and an apple bluetooth headset...

as for the syncing.. no problems whatsoever, but i do use a mac... blame windows for being flakey with sync on their own devices and this on obviously....

used to work at a store, and had ipod after ipod come back that wouldn't sync... always connected perfectly to a mac, and restored it from there... it is amazing how carp windows is at times with other devices..
