Notwithstanding the news this morning from Darling & reported on BBC;

I sent this enquiry to the Iceland compensation site linked to from Icesave:

Dear Sir

I currently hold funds in an Icesave easy saver account.
Can you let me know the process for accessing these funds due to the bank’s website currently being down , and if not immediately available a timeline when withdrawal will be possible.

Thank
you.

From the Prime Minister of Iceland
In a press conference today Iceland's Prime Minister, Mr. Geir H. Haarde, said that if needed the Icelandic Government will support the Depositors' and Investors' Guarantee Fund in raising the necessary funds, so that the Fund would be able to meet the minimum compensation limits in the event of a failure of an Icelandic bank.

The Icelandic banks have top up agreements in the following countries:
United Kingdom
The Netherlands
Norway
Finland
Sweden

The Fund would like to stress that no Icelandic bank has been declared insolvent.

Any further information will be put to the Funds website, www.tryggingarsjoður.is when needed.

Kind Regards

My reply 08/10 @ 11:28

Dear Sir;

What is the procedure and timeframe for accessing my funds?

It may not be insolvent, but currently none of MY funds in an IMMEDIATE access account are available.

(No response at this time)

So looks (to me) like left hand doesnt know what right hand is doing ... all the way from Icesave -> Iceland compensation scheme -> Iceland government -> UK Government

Feels like a waiting game...

    TBH after what has happened I would not believe a single word of what any official in Iceland told me, I imagine that the treasury have very good reason to believe that Iceland cannot be trusted to pay up without huge pressure; and certainly not to ordinary savers.

    I would feel much happier if the government will compensate rather than any tinpot Icelandic scheme. I would much prefer to be paid back quickly by our own government and have them chase Iceland for part of the money back, rather than have to chase 2 compensation schemes with 1 being in Iceland.

    I notice that the Icelandic Prime Minister is supposed to be making a statement regarding the situation with Icesave today at 5pm UK:

    Icesave customers to get UK support
    "...The Icelandic Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde is to clarify this matter in his speech at a press conference postponed to 4pm Icelandic time. " (5pm UK)

    I look forward to hearing what he has to say on the matter!
