Who owns what?

With all the merging going on and Banks owning Building Societies and everyone and his brother setting up "Banks" for example AA, Sainsbury's, British Gas etc etc how on earth can you find out who is owned or connected to whom (sorry if that isn't grammatical).
My OH is certain that Sainsbury's are totally Independent - whereas I have seen their name connected to HBOS (being owned 50% by each) so how can you find out and does Martin have a definitive list on this site anywhere?
I have looked via search but not turned up anything on here so far. It is important to know because the £50k compensation only overs one of the organisations and if you are lucky enough to have more than that sum spread around but unlucky enough for it to be within the same group - you could be losing out in the event of a crash.
Plus I just hate puttin my money all in one pot and prefer to spread it around a bit (despite it not being over the 50K).
I do however have an offset mortgage with around £130k in savings offsetting the £130k mortgage. Is this money safe or should I just clear the mortgage with the savings in todays financial uproar?

You could try looking at this table and reading the related article on the main site.Maidenover wrote: »With all the merging going on and Banks owning Building Societies and everyone and his brother setting up "Banks" for example AA, Sainsbury's, British Gas etc etc how on earth can you find out who is owned or connected to whom (sorry if that isn't grammatical).

Indeed.
A better question, that should have been asked 5 years ago was :
1 ) who owned the risks;
and, for people in general;
2 ) who owns our houses and companies. Whether it be Tchenguiz or Joe Blogs of no 37, peopel have been claiming and cashing in on wealth they never had;
and finally;
3 ) who REALLY owns the banks. It ain't the employees (from CEO to branch snake oil sales staff) who, along with borrowers, got us in this mess. Once you realise that, you have to accept "UK Banking Rescue" is a misnoma. It's bank employees who are being bailed out, not shareholders. Shareholders lose ownership, employees ket to keep their jobs.
Sorry, rant over.:rotfl: :rotfl:0
