HELP PLEASE: re problem with gas oven

Hi
My gas oven no longer cooks through - so I can't bake or roast or anything - last time I tried to roast a small chicken it took 3.5 hours!
Does anyone know what the problem could be? And, perhaps more importantly, how much it might cost to repair?
thanks.

  • Sounds like the thermostats failed and the gas valve has closed down and won't open, which wouldn't be a problem if you only ever cooked stews! You don't mention the cooker model so go online to a good search engine like Google or Ask and search for 'gas cooker spares'. You should find a suitable site for your cooker then search for thrmostats. Prices could be up to £60 or so. Might be time to wave your old oven good bye and fit a new one. I used to have a gas oven and changed to electric and found it to be brilliant!

    Thanks for this.
Ooooer:p I could never fit one myself I'm useless at stuff like that:o
But I think you might be right about the thermostat because it reheats stuff ok but cannot cope with uncooked food. So it seems as though it reaches the right temperature but doesn't stay there. I bought a little oven thermometer and that fooled me because I thought that by putting e.g. a caKE in at the right temp it would then cook - but it didn't just came out soggy in the middle:(.
Switching to elelctric would be a big job because a) I can't afford a new oven and b) I don't have the right wiring (apparently).
    thanks again
