It is free to the RECIPIENT of the text, but it still costs to SEND at the same price as a text.
And modgit -yes, it is fairly instant, ours arrived within about 10 seconds of sending.
I haven't tried it yet (I'm on T-mobile which is one of the networks that it doesn't work for - ours were sent with hubby's phone which is on the 3 network), but THIS site (same link as I put on the last page) says that text speech (Gr8 for instance) and emoticons ( 0:-) for angel) are able to be converted into speech.
Someone give it a go and let me know if it does work - hubby's at work so I can't test it myself!I'm a little angelBUT A WHOLE LOTTA DEVIL

Happy Christmas everyone, just bumping it up.
By the way T-mobile does send these messages but you can't use your free messages to do it though.[FONT=georgia, bookman old style, palatino linotype, book antiqua, palatino, trebuchet ms, helvetica, garamond, sans-serif, arial, verdana, avante garde, century gothic, comic sans ms, times, times new roman, serif]A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it
