  • I'll give them a go - just to re cap(sule:o ), they are one a day? I guess so after you said about recommend dose being 5000 etc!
Unless you have had a 25(OH)D test that suggests you need to take more to raise your status quickly. Use of vitamin D in clinical practice suggests that 50,000iu once a week for 8 weeks is a way to raise levels faster. To do that with 5000iu/capsules would require 10 ONCE a week, Another way would be to alternate even and odd days of the week with one (odd days) and two (even days) that way you would take 10 every week average 50,000iu over the week and average 7000iu daily. As your body uses between 3000 and 5000iu daily this means you are taking more every day than you use and hence catch up quicker. But you should only do this for EIGHT weeks, unless you have another 25(0H)D test and see how much you have caught up and if you still need to do more catching up.
That means that 250 days worth will last for approximately 250 days - good value!! Even with the postage/handling.
I usually buy 2 pots and only pay one lot of postage but with the $ <>£ value dropping I'm not sure if $30 is still under the £18 VAT threshold?

    Ted,

I've just read back thru the post - no need to repeat yourself.

I'm a bit concerned with taking 10 tabs in one day tho.... sounds a bit excessive :o and I can be a tad neurotic  when it comes to taking pills.

Apart from making one feel happier... how else in oneself will one benefit from taking these? I ask this because my sons skin always goes mad in the winter - when we have the sunshine - his skin is clear. Will the Vit D3 benefit him too?

I've not had any kind of test - I'm just going on how I feel and what I have read on here that it is a good idea to take Vit D - and then saw your comments re Vit D3.

    Guess work in my case....

I am just repeating what is standard practice to correct vitamin D insufficiency. Without a 25(OH)D test nobody can be sure what your vitamin D status is. But certainly taking the amount of vitamin d daily that your body uses daily, while there is no input from sunshine cannot possibly lead to trouble.

Your body had 900+ different Vitamin D receptor sites, each of these sites has the ability to trigger any of the 200+ gene reactions dependent on circulating 25(OH)D so with that many different functions able to operate as evolution intended there are literally hundreds of different things that could improve. For a brief laymans guide to the role of vitamin D you may find Vitamin D Deficiency the cause of everything? a useful introduction.

It's getting a bit late now so I haven't time to sort you out the science papers but certainly if you take vitamin d orally it will get through to improve your skin. I have found that because I take vitamin D through the winter when it comes to spring time in April I just have to go outside and I tan straight away without burning. D3 not only acts as an anti inflammatory agent but also as an anti biotic so if I scratch my skin previously it would go manky and septic now I can prune the hedge and get scratched all over and within a couple of days everything has healed up nicely with no septic bits. I always used to have a bit of dandruff but I've not had any for ages now any condition that tends to get worse in the winter is likely to respond to vitamin d treatment and if it doesn't than there are plenty of other beneficial aspects that adequate vitamin d status helps.
