The British Government said that it would not protect British depositors if the Icelandic compensation scheme, which guarantees the first €20,000, failed. A spokesman for the Treasury said: “Landsbanki is regulated by the Icelandic authorities so the issue is one for the Icelandic Government.”

    There needs to be continual pressure put on the UK Govt to prevent them trying to wriggle off the hook here. Icesave was allowed to paint itself as an FSCS-protected bank offering Government-regulated products like ISAs.

    It's a national disgrace if the UK Govt allows savers to lose out over this.
