Why 6 figures? £50K @ 5% = £208 per month.
A lot of people are like OH and I, early retired (redundant) and too young to draw pensions, so relying on savings interest for day to day living. Stashing gold etc. is not an option.
NB A word of advice re. ISAs. Even if you are a non-taxpayer it is worth putting your £3,600 allowance into one, as the tax free status rolls over year on year, so that money is tax free regardless of how your circumstances change. I didn't bother one year as the rate was the same as the savings a/c I would have drawn the money from, and I still regret that stupidity as you can never get that lost year's allowance back.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Just put it a couple of feet under the Rhubarb in the back garden.
Shouldn't take too long to dig it out in an emergency, put it in a plastic net bag like you get oranges in when you bury it..
Oh, and don't tell anyone you have gold, or mention Rhubarb. Damn :wall:Very good now where do you live.:D
But is second hand gold worth less? I thought it was?0 -
I have my saving in RBS and HBOS, I did have a KE account with £1 in it, but I have closed that down, phew close one eh! Im torn where to go next - will possibly open a online savings account with B&B as it's still at 6.5%.0

I'm like lostinrates, trying to sustain the value of my saved cash. I'm also thinking about where to put the money when the house sale goes through. The way talk is going on here though, I'm beginning to wonder if I should sell the house at all now, as I own it outright and it'll always be worth 'a house.' I don't even dislike it; it's just in the wrong place.
Typical. Spend all year trying to sell; then, when I'm under offer, the prospect of being in rented with a pile of cash begins to look risky!0 -
I'll be honest with you, I never even thought about metal detectors!!
The places that I used were pretty inaccessible anyway or just simply in the middle of nowhere like some remote area of the N Yorks moors buried under some heather, for example, neither of which would be places people would ever go to.
In a conversation I once had with a metal detector enthusiast, he was talking about intelligent planning for treasure detection search, and said you had to put yourself in the minds of people who buried valuables, especially those who had to leave an area to later return to collect in the future.. or to tell their children where to find.
Features of the land can change with the passage of time, so it is more likely someone burying items of considerable value might choose a location where there are more permanent style marker/markers/features of the land to track back from - instead of some wide open fields, amongst many a field.
That guy was lucky to return and find that blood-diamond he buried hurriedly in the movie in a panic, in the bush up a distance from a river, although a metal detector wouldn't be of help there either.
Perhaps a bit more thought to it, like Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption with his hidden tin for Red to collect .."long rock wall with a big oak tree at the north end, and piece of black volcanic glass" although even that was a bit too vulnerable for changes of time and disturbance imo. Anyway, good luck locating your stuff under the heather on some remote barren moor.0 -
