IceSave: Do we need to settle down?

I have around £56,000 tied up in IceSave and I am still slightly numb after todays events.

I would however expect the government of the UK to help those of us out who have over £50,000 saved with IceSave, nobody has lost out on their saving before. This unstable labour government will not want to lose a large voting block if it does not help us out.

Its likely those with savings via ISA's will be able to transfer to other ISA's (this is in the governments interest so they will ensure it happens).

Besides Martin despite the criticism he is getting is fighting out corner, so what I say to everyone is settle down and apply pressure to the UK governemnt via emails etc. Remember Icelanders have their savings 100% protetected, it will look bad on the government if British savers are treated differently.

Some may say I'm misguided, but I do think all the scarmongering is foolish and causing people to feel ill etc.

Comments

  • I would simply advise people to wait for the facts and listen to what Martin has to say, its too early at the moment to say anything.

Having slightly over £50K means that you MAY be lucky and there could be enough money left over for you to get all your money. If not I think it's unlikely the government will spend cash on the 5% who had more than that amount in there (and to be honest I support that as you should have known the limit of the compensation - don't mean to add to your woes but that's my opinion).

ISA's is an interesting subject, there is no legal requirement for the government to allow this, however I think they probably will because it'll be a popular move with lots of people making ISAs seem even safer and a better investment (not that I know of a better investment ... well maybe flowers, wine and [expensive] chocs on a first date comes close)

I'd be more than happy to receive whatever protection I can get from the governments(') protection of the banking industry. But it's ironic that the foot & mouth affected cattle farmers (and their down-the-line-customers/consumers) got told to "go whistle" when they asked for the same thing back in 2001, isn't it?

    I tend to ignore nicholbb.

He's a dangerous fool who arrived just a few days ago to "reassure" everyone that Icesave was sound, and to call anyone who questioned that "crazy" and "clueless"....

This is all looking less funny by the hour. Landsbanki is said to have major holdings in UK companies which it is likely to sell in order to repatriate the money. the Iceland PM is openly suggesting that the country may go bankrupt. It is obviously right that all Landsbanki assets if not all Icelandic assets in the UK should be frozen immediately by the UK government until the Iceland government has given express assurances that funds are in place sufficient to compensate all UK depositors in the event of Landsbanki failing.

Wow a crazy person posted! I had written some arguments but as you are obviously a completely clueless person I suggest everyone ignore this post till it disappears.

    Bizarre!

    Tell us about yourself, "nicholbb"...

When I say I think you can take that as opinion, if I say I know then you can question my sources. The reason I thought it unlikely is that the government doesn't have that much spare cash and the people with over £50K aren aren't their current target voters - they are heading more towards their core voters (who they managed to upset with the 10p tax rate).

Turns out I was wrong and that the government will spend anyamount of tax payers cash to win votes

Next is a response to edwinac and adds nothing constructive but I enjoy making fun of him.
Quite how telling some person that they are probably going to lose £6K is reassuring edwinac I'm not sure but if you take comfort in the loss of someone else then congrats.
"reassure" everyone that Icesave was sound
If your referring to the post I made in the thread called Kaupthing Edge thread with a twist - who's not bothered?) then
I shouldn't need to point out that that was about Kaupthing to any one of normal inteligentce, as it's you that was about Kaupthing Edge not Icesave.

I called mybrainhurt crazy and clueless because he was demanding we freeze all Icelandic assets in the UK and that we all lobby our MPs to do so. He's clueless because this would be illegal under international law and crazy because doing so would have such a massive retaliatory impact from the rest of the world and the impact would bankrupt the country as every overseas company would then start withdrawing its assets. I also think that bothering an MP with such a stupid thing is a waste of time when they can be doing something much better. see nutters post for full story

edwinac the fact that you keep defending mybrainhurt indicates that you are likely to be the same person who's sitting at home on your computer with a host of usernames trying to pretend your have a friend.

edwinac I would take it personally, however, I understand you are just a lonely (excluding your alts) forum troll looking for attention in your own way.

Ignore me as you want I don't care, when I see posts like this I will continue to demean, mock and laugh at you (and your alts) in the way that you deserve (BTW I haven't responded to this duplicate post in other threads).
  • At the end of the day all Icesavers are LUCKY! It could have just as easily went against you.

What i find oustanding is people blaiming this site and at the same time having more than the intitial £35k in an account. Surely you read the risks of having more than that in any bank. So had you lost anything more than the first £35k which was said to be protected it would be your own fault. £50k was only a recent change, so unless you were totally stupid to research Iceland wasn't doing well, you had put yourself at risk from day 1.

Learn from your mistakes as the taxpayer might not be there to bail you out next time. Personally, I don't even think it should be there this time since it's not even a British bank.

So what about the 'foot and mouth millionaires'?

The government have their reasons for doing this. Although a good jester to compensate all money. Its the right one for the 1st 50k. Remember the account pays tax in the UK and deserves protection by the government.
