Car Insurance - Seperated Vs Married

Hi
I don't know whether anyone can help me with this. I've been trying to get quotes for car insurance and when I put in that I'm seperated it doubles my quote to if I put 'married' in the status field.
Does anyone know if I can still put I'm married until I am legally seperated or divorced?
Thanks to anyone with a decent answer as to why we're supposed to become worse drivers when we no longer have a husband!

would have thought you are allowed to put "married" until you are legally not married
i think the price is higher when you are "seperated" is because seperated probably tells the insurer something about your lifestyle which means you're the kind of person who's more likely to have an accident maybe?0
