Getting data off an old laptop?

My laptop died a few weeks ago and I now have a brand spanking new one. I realy need to be able to get all the data from my old hard drive and wondered if there was a way of doing it? I took it in to a local repair shop and he said he could do it but would cost me £100!
Somebody told me that you can buy a convertor that allows me to take the harddisk out of my old laptop and connect it to my new one but he didnt realy know what I needed to buy.
The old laptop will not power up and every time I try and put the power cable in it just gives off a strange smell so I guess that it isnt very healthy!
Any help that will save me that £100 would be greatly appreciated

Can anyone tell me if this is the right thing. I have opened my old laptop and found that it is a SATA connection so hopefully this will work!
