vaillant combi boiler problem

Came home tonight looking forward to a lovely hot bath after two hard days and found water cold, checked the boiler and it's showing a temp of 17. Tried turning the dials but goes straight back to 17. All the lights are out. It does seem to fire up (makes the same noises as if it is working). I've tried switching it off and on.

It was serviced less than a month ago. An added complication is that I'm away for the next two days so no way I can be in for a plumber (I could take a day off on Friday  although already had one off for last plumber visit)

Central heating is not working either. And we're in Scotland and it's freezing!

Any suggestions? Please?

Can you see a dial that shows a pressure reading? (Might be on or close to a red pressure vessel) This is the pressure of the water in the boiler's heating loop and if too low it won't actually do anything. (Pressure can leak out of the loop)

There should / may be a connnection between the inlet to the pressure vessel and the water pipes, with a control valve at each end. IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT you are doing*, you can gently turn on these two valves until the pressure guage shows about "2 bar" - which may be indicated by a fixed red needle on the dial. when done turn off both valves. Note: theoretically, the link pipe/tube is suppsed to be removable/ removed by the installer except when actually being used to reset the pressure. However it is often left in place.
    * If you don't know what you're doing, get a plumber.

    Idea 2-
Possible that even with the noises, the boiler isn't actually firing up. See if you can find and press the reset button to relight the pilot/ reset the start-up process. OTOH, this could need a new circuit board.

Hope this helps. I've had both these on my boilers.

Thanks for your post. Decided we couldn't go for three days without a shower so took the day off to get the plumber back out. Seems like the fan has gone, so he has to get a new one and it will be Friday before he can come back.

So still Friday before we can wash  but if I'd waited it would have been a very cold weekend!
