Dvd recorder - what to look for?

I'm looking for a DVD recorder but finding all the specs confusing
All a bit over my head really:o
I'm primarily looking for something I can use to burn old video tapes on to disk with but would obviously like a good dvd recorder to use afterwards to record freeview & watch dvd's.
These are the two i've been looking at, are there any obvious differences between them and would they be suitable for my purposes?
Sony RDR-HXD890B 160GB HDD Recorder HDMI
Panasonic DMR-EX768EBK

In all honesty, I wouldn't bother with the DVD recorder, just get a PVR, they're SOOO much better
