Revving 206

My mum has an S reg Peugeot 206 and about 18 months ago as soon as it was started, it revved to about 3000rpm and stayed there. Somebody suggested it was the ECU, but before she had it checked, it corrected itself. Now 18 months later it is revving again at a constant 3000rpm. There does not seem to be any sticking of the throttle. Last time the person said it would probably need a new ECU at £500 to £800. Is this a known problem, is it likely to be the ECU and does the price seem right?

Is it worth taking it down to the Peugeot dealers for a diagnostic check first?

Any advice gratefully received.

Chris.

Could be a number of things. Yes the ECU could be to blame but also get someone to check the throttle linkage from the pedal to the engine as it may be sticking somewhere and just become unstuck when it stops doing it. It could have a poor air feed, due to a blockage somewhere so the ECU will allow more fuel into the engine making it rev higher to compensate, although 3,000 rpm seems a little high for this to be the case. Also the plennum where the fuel goes into the injectors (im assuming the car is fuel injected) could be sticking open causing the same effect as the throttle cable being stuck.

Try and find a peugeot 206 forum as most cars you can read the fault codes from the ECU yourself without the need for a diagnostics check. I check mine on my Vauxhall Cavalier SRi depending how many times the ECU light flashes after i have put a paperclip in the plug across the diagnostic pins and save myself £30 a time by doing so (this is how much Vauxhall charge for the priviledge).

Could be idle control valve. Don't replace ECU for £500. First up take all ECU wiring harness connectors apart and spray with WD40. Poor connections will cause problems.
Are they fly by wire? If so check throttle pot. Finally, if ECU is suspected, you can bu reconditioned ECUs from https://www.atpelectronics.com.

Sorry should have added that it's a 1.4 petrol.

Unfortunately, I cant fiddle with it myself as she lives on her own about 150 miles away, so she'll have to take it in somewhere.
I've been searching for a 206 forum since I posted but can't find anything. I've also been searching through the Honest John Forums.
