Why Are BT Raising High Cancellation Charges When You Cancel 12 Month Call Bundles

Can anybody explain why large cancellations fee,s are being charged by BT to cancel 12 month rolling contract call bundles early, when the customer has been with BT for longer then a year and therefore the usual cancellation fee for cancelling a line early eg up to £70 should not normally be added to the cancellation costs.

Are BT i wonder when you start one of these rolling call contracts, starting you on a new 12 month line rental contract as well, without making it clear.

Heres a recent example. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1204147
I have seen two or three more around the net.

The contract for the calling plans superseeds the contract for the line and regardless of how long you have had the line, if you take out a special offer with the calling plans it will have a contract with a held to term charge if cancelled within contract.

When placing an order for one of these offers, or any other service, the advisor should give you the DSR (Distance Selling Regulations) information, which includes the length of contract. The special offers in question also advise that there will be a termination charge if cancelled and that it is based on the number of months left in the minimum term or any rolling period.

There is also a held to term contract on the reduced connection charge off.

The standard line contract is also a held to term contract, but has a cap of £70 on it.
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.

Thanks i appreciate all that, but how do you account for a cancellation fee of £100 plus then for cancelling a 12 month rolling contract inclusive evening and weekend call bundle, when the line rental is out of contract.Surely the most it would ever normally be is 12 months x £2.70= £32.40 if their are no other products being cancelled.

Because of the price of the calling plan is £14.45 per month, which is £2.70 more than line rental. It's not line rental plus £2.70.

When you take out an offer like this, you are agreeing to keep your rental with BT.

It was never made clear to me that i was signing up for another years line rental, and the T&C dont make it clear that you are signing up for another years line rental . The impression i got was i was only signing up for the free evening and weekend calls, and if i ceased early you just paid a the outstanding amount due on the call package,as i would do if if i was cancelling any other call package.

I personally dont wish to leave BT at this point of time anyway but if i did i would certainly object to be charged for the remaining line rental.
