Combi-condensing boiler & TRV's...

  • thanks devon did not think of that.. any ideas on a suitable temperature for the central heating?

canuckelhead.. with a room stat wont you get uneven temperatures between rooms, depending on sunlight etc? i'm sure i was told TRVs are better as you can get each room just right

TRVs are for sure a great idea (make sure you do have one rad fitted without a TRV in the room where the thermostat/programmer is).

I lowered my boiler to 73C and did a touch test for scalding- if I had children or elderly in the house, I think I would go lower.
I have found this lower temp is fine - the rooms DO take slightly longer to heat up, but it is not that noticable.
I also tend to keep a towel draped over the towel rad as an extra "guard".
  • Ive excatly the same set up and im thinking of getting a wireless room stat installed but not sure who to approach, an electrician or a heating person???

  • discountmummy.. why do you think a room stat will improve anything? i was thinking along your lines a few weeks ago but i realised the TRV's are probably better than a room stat as you have more control over each room. if you have a room stat then you might end up heating rooms unnecesarily. let me know if i'm missing anything :)

Because i dont want my heating on permantly only when the temprature drops below a cetain figure and i find they tvrs dont work like room stats i cant see what temp there programmed to!

  • hi the TRV temp's are probably the same as mine, which i posted before! I do agree with you though in that you need the heating on all the time for TRVs to work properly.

Maybe my best option is to set the heating on evening/morning and control temp with TRVs.

I can see your point that a room stat connected to the timer can turn the system on and off.

Thanks i think ill give setting the TVR's according to your leaflet temperatures ago first then when the weather is colder and like you have the heating on at set times like morning and evening, i think the only thing was i found altho i set my daughters room on 2 the radiator never seemed to come on and her room was freezing cold at night!

A Central Programmer in conjunction with TRVs is a very powerful way of controlling your general house temperature.

With that you can setup a variety of temps throughout the day so you don't get heating coming on at times you don't need it to, and then use the TRVs to turn off the heating at rooms you don't want heated - say a guest room or maybe a dining room which is only used at weekends, and in the other rooms to easily set the temp of each room as you like.

Wireless is a good way to go as although they are little more expensive, you will save far more then any extra cost whenit comes to installation.
Who should install it? long as you have the manual for your boiler and the manual that comes with the stat, either could install it, or you could even do it yourself!
  • Hi- sorry for the late reply. I have been playing around with the timer and TRVs and my conclusion is:
    - the TRVs are great as using them means you do not overheat a room and waste money
    - however my big problem is that without a thermostat linked to the boiler timer, then I will often have the boiler running the heating system even when its not that cold.
It might be that the TRVs are shutting off all the rads so not a lot of heat is being wasted, but surely it is costing money having the system running when its not necessary?
this leads me to think that a wireless stat in the hall/living room set to your absolute minimum living temperature, along with trvs to control each room, is the best idea.
Do I make sense here? Or is the cost of the boiler running with all rads closed off minimal? By the way my boiler is combi condensing and all mains pressured, I have no storage tanks.

Yes you have come to all the correct conclusions, you really want a room stat.

I have just moved to a house with a simple room stat and a timer on the boiler the last 5 years I have a combined room stat and timer, and I want the later so I can set different temps at different times.
