    Hi,

I work in a job where I take photos, and the prices whilst seem high, are quite good value if you compare to professionally taken photos in a studio etc., by the time the photographer has been paid and the school has its commission, there isn't alot left. If you want to compare prices take a look a the threads where people have gone to Venture Photography or a similar company on the promise of a £25 photo and ended up spending £1000.

If you don't like the photo or you can't afford to buy, then you shouldn't feel pressured into buying. Also if you feel the photos are expensive, perhaps you should approach the school to find a photographer that does better value for money packs.

I'm not particularly flush but I don't find them particularly unreasonable, especially when (as some have already said) you compare the prices to those if you had photos done elsewhere. Plus all you have to do if you don't want them is just not buy them. If you had them done in a studio you'd be subjected to the hard sell too. The photographers that DS's nursery use do an excellent package with a good selection of sizes without mounts (which are a waste of money imo) for about £17. DD's school use someone who isn't quite as good value I find. I've always said that if I didn't like the pic then I wouldn't buy it, but so far they've all been nice. What I've also bought in the past is photos from the local paper - DD's been in twice with the school - they did a first day at school picture and also a St David's day picture. I think I paid about £7 for an 8x10.

My dd just got her photo taken at nursery and the packages range from £15 to £60 !! there is a sticker on the pack saying "Your Child had a great photo shoot we recommend you get a photo cd as part of your purchase" which is an extra £10 . Not sure what to do as the photo they have printed is ok but my dd isn't smiling so don't think it's that brill. Surely they would have picked the best photo to print out. I am tempted but if that's the nicest photo I'll be dissapointed.
Bit naughty the have printed about 17 copies in various sizes of this 1 photo and given it to my dd in a clear plastic envelope she showed EVERYONE on the way home "my photo" . I have a thing in that I don't like destroying photos (is that just me?) and I know that's what will happen to these if we don't buy them . AARGH I'm just being daft.

    Violetta,

Do not feel in any way obligated to buy the photos or the disk. Us photographers are used to a little rejection every now and then, not a lot mind you, bit a little is fine :-) . There is no way that the best photo would not have been printed it would be commercial suicide. So..... if you are not happy with the photo shown then i would not worry. Instead why not try and take her to a local toddler group on photo day, then you can see how she gets on and the group will be happy as they will get the commission.
    good luck

Thanks vickyj I did think that would prob be the case I was just a bit surprised as the photo would have been nicer if she was smiling , she does usually take a good photo (me biased ?never) so I wondered if they might have just printed an ok one in the hope that we'd buy the disc for the better ones.
Seems a bit odd printing and giving us so many copies too , how many people would be tempted to return the pack with 1 or 2 missing in the hope they'd not notice. I couldn't do that but, and I know this is terrible I am tempted to scan the pic.

We always buy the group photo of the year group /class etc. You can easily take photos of your children in their school uniform but you cannot replicate the group photos. My son's school prints the names of each child underneath the photo - very useful in 10 years time.

On photo day I always send my boys with their collars neatly tucked inside the neck of the jumper (if you know what I mean), which looks smarter for a boy.

The bloody photographer always pulls them back out, so annoying!

This year my littleun had photo day and I'd forgotten, he hasn't had his haircut in a while so will be a bit of a mop head photo!
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

DD's school don't do that (neither did mine!) but one of DD's classmates has a big brother in the comp that they'll be going to and when he was in his GCSE year earlier this year, they had a large individual photo, which came in a mount with a small individual photo of each child with their name underneath their picture. It's a bit difficult to describe but it was really really good.
