How effective is the upscaling capability on the upscaling DVD players?
I have just purchased an upscaling player capable (apparently) of upscaling to 1080p, and will be plugging it in with an HDMI cable.

My HD 1080p TV arrives tomorrow.
I'm just after an informed opinion on how good the picture quality will be compared to the old DVD players. I obviously don't think it will reach true HD quality though.
Thanks in advance.

You should notice a difference, but as you say, it's not going to match Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.0

Just as I thought. One of the lads at work has an upscaling player that upscales to 780p and says he doesn't notice any difference at all!
I was hoping that this wasn't the case, as what's the point in the technology if it's no different to the old stuff!!
Mind you the player I bought was for £39.99 and got rated at 4/5 in 'What Hi-Fi and Home Cinema' magazine, so it can't be too bad!John

The DVDs i've watched through my HDTV that have been upscaled don't look that different to how they were on my CRT TV. What does make the difference is that you're not watching SD into HD which is where notice a drop in picture quality.0

I've got that DVD player - very nice one it is too.
I think it's better, but purely because it's over HDMI rather than scart. After all, any 1080p TV has to upscale any non-1080p content anyway (or it'd show small on the screen). You have to decide if your 40 quid DVD player does this better than your 800 quid TV.
I think the major quality difference is due to the cable...0 -
Really depends on the player and the tv. My pioneer tv upscales better than both upscaling dvd players I have. Which tv is it? (make and model):idea:0

I don't know how you can tell how good the TV/DVD combi will upscale. Would anyone have the time to enlighten me??
TVM again!John

Unfortunately, LG dont have a reputation as being very good anymore. So I would hazard a guess the dvd player would upscale better.:idea:0 -

You say that mate, but the guys at work who know more about this sort of thing than me recommended them! The 17 reviews reviews on 'reevoo.com' gave this particular model 9/10.
Here's hoping they're right and your wrong :rotfl: .
Thanks for the input anyways.John

I was talking purely about its 'scaling' capabilities. As with most tvs, it CAN produce a very good picture when fed with something decent. But LGs in particular (generally speaking) suffer with 'motion' quite a bit (meaning 'screen graphics' come into play), and the default 'colour' is nearly always 'off the mark' for some strange reason.
I cant find a pro' review of THAT particular tv, but heres what LGs look like in general ~
