How much to fix a puncture?

Options
I've got a bolt/screw deeply imbedded into a £30 tyre from my fiesta. It appears to pass pretty straight through the near centre of the tread. What's a fair price to get this repaired?

Thanks
I am a cider drinker - like my father before me.

An ordinary puncture is usually about £4 or £5. If you have to get a tube, it would probably cost another £4 or £5.
  • If it's more than a tenner take it elsewhere. Never paid more than a tenner to get one done anywhere in the country. If you let on where you are (county/town) someone will no doubt come up with a reputable local place.

If you're in South Northumberland, Tyne & Wear or Co. Durham - I recommend Tyre Spot (addresses in the yellow pages).

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

I had a puncture this summer, so rang round and got quotes for both repair and new tyres at the same time. I was quoted up to £20+ for repair, from some of the 'well known high street' tyre people. In the end, I took it to the local Ford garage (I have a Toyota) - the chap mended it and charged me £5 (cash) - should have been about £9 I think. As a new tyre costs me £80-120+ each, I thought that was fine.

The only reason I got quotes for a new tyre at the same time, was because I didn't want to end up at a garage, who then told me the tyre was not repairable, but then find they were the most expensive.

I thought the government were trying to stop puncture repairs?

We've always had free puncture repairs with our tyres - got them through one of the big tyre chains but I can't remember which one of the top of my head as OH usually deals with that kind of thing. If you have the receipts still it might be worth checking...
  • I paid £6.50 recently at a local garage, also on a Fiesta with a nail in tread
