Natwest 'losing' a standing order

Hi All,
I'm just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation...
In September I tried to set up a standing order online (using my silly card reader) from October for a set amount per month - which is my rent to my new landlord.
This didnt work and gave the error message 'account invalid' so I went into the branch to do it, which they did and which I have a recipet for. At the same time I withdrew £800.00 cash and paid it into the same account by walking it over the road to the Landlords bank - this cash payment went through no problems.
Then on 2nd October I notice on my online banking that no payment has gone out and when I checked the standing order list - it wasnt there...
A quick trip to the bank later and I discover that there is no standing order set up (good job I have the reciept for it eh!)...so they'll investigte and get back to me within 48 hours...
48 hours later and they havent got back to me, so I hope foot it over to my branch again and wait in line only to be told 'ah yes we've investigated, the account numbers you've given us dont exist'. Thanks for telling me! So they set up a CHAPS payment for the 1st October payment (fees waived thanks goodness)...
But I dont understand how this can happen - the cash goes in fine, but they cant set up a standing order...(I should say the LLs banks is part of the same group as Natwest as well)...
Has anyone else had this problem - how did you solve it? I do not want this to happen next month...my LL might lose his temper (luckily hes been good about the whoel affair to date)...I'm waiting on the CHAPS payment result...hopefully that will go through and prove to them there is an account there, but what if it doesnt...?
Help please MSEers
