Change in circumstances - whats the best way to declare?

Up until August this year I was working approx 30 hours a week, claiming WTC. I am now working fewer hours, in an adhoc way, a couple of days in a restraunt, and a day or so cleaning. No definate hours as such, but currently under 16 per week.
I do not want to be claiming anything that I am not entitled to but I am unsure as to the best way of going about this.
Should I keep to working less than 16 hours a week, and change from claiming WTC to Income support (which seems to be the first thing I would have to declare), or do I go one step further and declare myself as "self employed"....? If so, where does this leave me with regard to any benefits. I believe I would be entitled to some housing benefit, as my salary is reduced, but I am not sure what other areas this will affect. I am more than capable of doing my own book-keeping and am not trying to take jobs for cash that I wont declare.
I just need some advice on how best to proceed, and if you can foresee any pitfalls.
Many thanks.
