Mp3 Tagger suggestions

I'm currently on the look for a decent mp3 tagger.

I've previously used Dr Tag (which is brilliant), but it's an older version and I'd rather look for a decent free equivalent, before shelling out on a new version.

Was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I basically need something that can handle large collections, and be able to auto tag in the artist/album/01 - Something.mp3 format. The less I have to do/edit/ammend the better.

Also what other tagging options are there? I remember reading about a couple of others but have forgotten. ID3v1 is too restrictive as it only allows fixed characters, and ID3v2 is poor in terms of performance as it sits at the beginning of the file, so the whole file has to be re-written if you change it.

ed. Apparently ID3v2.4 sits at the end of the file. Hmmm, gonna look into just writing something myself. Already written code that will read a tag, so half way there.

MusicBrainz.org has the best one as it compares your tag to what the other people think the tag should be, be very careful when you use it though, do a few at a time.

TheGodfather is another one but it's go so many freakin' options! very complicated but powerful.
  • i have thousands on my pc currently and have bin using psychic mp3 which uses the cddb database to auto tag a directory (1 directory at a time) for you dont know if that is what u want to do or just individual tracks

Sorry for not getting back yet, been busy experimenting with my own tagger, just getting to grips with the id3 tag spec.

Hmm yes I've seen TheGodfather before, might download and try that. Thanks.

I've got near 8,000 mp3's so quite a lot to tag. Hence ideally I'd like it to work without me having to check on it. Everything's named appropriately, I just need it to manipulate the directory/filenames.
