AVG is upto version 8 ~ so yes, AVAST would find more (avg 7.5 was JUST an anti virus, they also had a SEPERATE anti spyware, these 2 are now combined in version 8)
I think you probably didnt have the lastest UPDATES though judging from what AVAST has found as AVG would most certainly have found them!:idea:0 -
I did keep AVG 7.5 updated so not sure why it did not find these.0

AVG stopped updating 7.5 a while ago ~ not sure when though. Perhaps AVG wasnt working properly?
Try MALWAREBYTES
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
UPDATE and QUICK SCAN (for now)
I would also suggest SPYBOT
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
UPDATE, IMMUNISE and SCAN
Hopefully all will be sorted then
Im baffled though. You say you uninstalled Mcaffees firewall? i thought that was a part of the full mcafee package? You didnt have avg AND Mcafee anti viruses running did you?? (Not good):idea:0 -
Thanks for your reply , to answer your questions -
AVG 7.5 stopped working - something to do with resident shield I think. It had continued updating till then. So uinstalled AVG and installed AVAST.
Following that Mcafee personal firewall only(as supplied by AOL) started using 99% cpu on startup for 15 mins. So ditched that and installed Zonealarm. Did not have Mcafee anti virus.
Also have Ad-aware which I admit I don't remember to run very often.
Will try your suggestions MALWAREBYTES & SPYBOT0 -
ok doki
Just for the record though, you really should sort out the anti virus if it fails to work as ANYTHING could get through then (Which is probably what happened, it was just failing to scan at any given time)!
Best of luck:idea:0 -

I did sort out the antivirus almost straight away - well as soon as husband told me it was broke (maybe a day). So accept that stuff could have got through in that time. What I'm not sure on though is why it is still getting through - I've done about 3 Avast scans and each time it finds something.
Thanks for you help - maybe back for more advice depending on what other software finds.0 -
Sounds to me like AVG was 'broken' for some time!
Anyways, dont worry about it. Lets just see how things go.:idea:0 -
results from MALWAREBYTES
22 objects found - all Adware.Coupons and Rogue.RegistrySmart
presume it is safe to just remove them ?
now looking at spybot0 -
"AVG stopped updating 7.5 a while ago ~ not sure when though."
I didn't bother upgrading to AVG 8 and keep using 7.5 after reading the comments about it on here some time ago, however I still get updates in fact the last one was a few minutes ago.
When I fire it up there is a little message telling me that version 8 is now available and inviting me to download it. I am technically challenged so can anybody tell me what version I have please ?0
