I was browsing last night and everything froze - Outlook, IE and a Word doc I had open. All refused to do anything and after about 10 mins I turned the machine off (was nothing else I could do).
It now refuses to start up again at all. There is a little green light on the front (I presume this is the power light) and nothing else. I have tried removing the battery and reinserting it (nothing) and turning it on on mains power with the battery removed and also inserted (nothing).
It is a Asus F5 running Windows XP Professional and I have had it for just over a year (24 months warranty). I have contacted Asus for them to collect it to look at.
Does anyone know what is likely to be the problem and is it fixable? Will I lose all my data on there, etc?
ps I am currently on my hubby's laptop

Is the laptop making any sound at all when you try to start it up or does it just play dead?
It sounds like it could be a dead HDD, but then again it could have over heated and fried itself. Do not take out the Hard drive as suggest by a previous poster as some companies will Void your warranty if you do this.
The technician should be able to fix it in your home have the said they are defiantly going to take it away if so are they providing you with a replacement in the mean time?
One last thing to ask them, do you receive a new warranty from the date the return it to you or does the old one continue? I only ask as i had a computer fixed once and two weeks after it died again but the original warranty had run out so they refused to fix it.
If they wont extend the whole warranty get them to warranty the part/parts for 12/24 months.0 -
give it them back minus the hard disk.
have you removed the power connector and the battery at the same time
I haven't tried this - I didn't think the laptop would work at all

I think the warranty just continues and the parts a warranteed for either the remaining period or 3 months, whichever is the longer.
