Keep going round and round and round!

I'm running Vista (HP) and MS Excel 2002. Last few weeks I have been having problems opening Excel documents.

If I open XL and use a spreadsheet and then save (as .xls onto desktop). I cannot then open the document from the desktop. If I double click to open it, I get the windows box 'do you want to save or open this file' either I can click OPEN or SAVE and I get a blank white box (momentarily) and the 'do you want to save or open this file' again. The only way to go into the document is to start XL and use the OPEN command.

Is there any way around this? Is it a conflict with OpenOffice?

Any help would be great as it's driving me mad. :rotfl:

Excel and OpenOffice should be able to co-exist without a problem. However, if you installed OO after Excel, it will probably have changed the file associations so that double-clicking a .xls will start OO, not Excel. If that's true in your case, it sounds like your OpenOffice installation is broken.

Check your File Associations to see what program is associated with a .xls file. In XP you can do this in Windows Explorer, Folder Options, File Types, and if you click "Change" it will show both recommended and possible programs to choose from.

They've probably put the function somewhere completely different in Vista, but an internet search for "vista change file association" should do the trick.
