    hi
is there no way you can rent out a room in your home .It can bring in alot of money ,i believe theres threads about it but i cant do links (sorry).
Make sure you keep your spirits up and focused .Your not alone and a good attitude to debts is part of the battle won.
I would target your smallest high interest debts first ,do you know what the snowball effect is?
Life is short, smile while you still have teeth :D
  • thanks for that - yes I have thought about getting rid of my car but because I work shifts - sometimes I start at 4 in the morning so it is not possible to get public transport - when I start at a reasonable time I do take public transport but with the shifts I work I do need my car at the moment and only use it when necessary
  • I have looked at taking in a lodger and did try advertising earlier this year but got no response - what is the best way to go about this does anybody know? Obviously I would need to be careful who I get but would certainly think down that road as it would be a big help and also not so lonely

When I was working away from home a lot the 1st place I used to look when I was trying to find a room to rent was the noticeboards at work.
  • I thought about that one but I do live quite a way from my place of work and there are a lot of rented accommodation around where I work - I have even thought of renting a place nearer my work but that doesn't solve the house problem as I can't sell it with the market being like it is - 12 months ago I could have sold it for 115,000 but with the present climate it is only worth about 85,000 to 89000 so am stuck with it at the moment even thought about renting my house out but again wouldn't get enough rent to pay the mortgage and couldn't afford to rent somewhere else as well

    Hi again
Think carefully about getting a lodger. I went down that route and my bills doubled and I lost my single persons council tax discount so I was no better off. In fact, I was worse off as I was struggling to pay the increased bills and couldn't keep increasing the rent. Also, I didn't declare to my mortgage company that I had a lodger so damaged caused was not covered under my insurance policy. If I had declared, it would have increased my insurance payment which I couldn't afford.

Not trying to put you off, but it didn't work for me as the rent money didn't cover the increase in bills.

    Mortgage free since 2014 :)
  • Thanks for your advice must admit I was very nervous about getting a lodger as I did take in a couple of lodgers 18 months ago and they really ripped me off - they said they did not have a deposit for the first 2 weeks as a bond and because I was desperate I said ok - the used the house and all its facilities to the highest level and I felt a stranger in my own home they just took over - they never bought food and ate mine they missed rents when they were due and then they did a runner taking things from the house - this couple were Polish and begged me to let them have a room - they took liberties with everything I was left out losing money and like you say I lost my single persons benefit for council tax - I did put an advert in the local paper and also at the local college earlier this year but heard nothing but after reading your comments and the experience I went through it is not easy so thanks for reminding me as when you get desperate you let your barriers down

I work in a newsagents, and we occassionally get builders and siteworkers asking if we know of anyone that has got a room to let? You could put an ad in a shop window for a few weeks and see what happens? Use your discrection (?) and ask people where they work / a bit about their history. Ask for proof of income if it makes you any more comfortable.
oh & have you phoned CCCS yet? the sooner you do, the sooner they can advise and help you directly. ;)
  • thanks for your reply - I will try my local newsagents - with regards to CCCS - I filled in the form and they said at the end because of my outgoings I don't have any monies left to pay my creditors - have looked at where I can cut down and more or less cut everything to the bone and they say they can't help until I have money left to pay credits so am looking at it again and again to see if I can get an answer

not that I want to encourage you to use excuses, but if any of your creditors do contact you, you can still say 'I am dealing with cccs' but only if they ask - say that you haven't got a client no. yet - or do you have one anyway?

how about citizen's advice? they can help with letters / intervene. or, there's a few people on here that are doing their own dmp - contacting creditors and arranging payments themselves...
