HOAX0 -
If you ever receive a message which warns of a virus and tells you that Symantec/Norton/McAffee etc can't detect it then you can safely assume its a hoax - especially if tells you to search for a file and then delete it.
While it is possible for someone to write a virus which current AV programs won't detect the AV companies will work night and day to adapt their software to detect all common viruses and most of the uncommon onesTANSTAAFL !0 -

What would you do if I sent you a photocopied letter telling you this?. Would you believe me? Would you do it? Of course not!The_Daily_Telegraph wrote:The Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Times say that the Ford Motor Corporation has told everyone not to use BP fuel as their cars might explode because the fuel was dangerous. Please photocopy this letter and pass it on to all of your friends
This is an email virus, just passed on by people instead of automatically. Just check on Symantec for these hoaxes. Apart from local IT support, I have never had a real message like this in over 15 years.A_lazy_virus_writer wrote:Please pass this message on to your friends, then delete all the files on your PCJumbo

Like Jim and Charlie say, by the time an average bod gets an email about a NEW "virus" it'd be too late as either:-
a.) they're infected already
b.) the AV writers have already sorted it and issued updates.
I've worked in IT support for 10 years and have seen 1 outbreak on my system. It was a mutated version of a fairly common virus. We were the first people worldwide to report it and our AV company issued an update to block it within 4 hours.
But to be honest you'll never stop this kind of thing, from 1 office of about 800 people I used to reliably get a "warning" from a member of staff around once a week.
I just had a standard email reply thanking them for their vigilance, but pointed out that it was a hoax and that they should check it against a hoax list before emailing people....
