RBS - Banks have bad credit ratings too

According to the news, RBS have been "downgraded" which means their own credit rating is suffering. So it's not just the average customer who worries about these things it would seem. What effect do you think this will have with account holders? If you have an account, are you tempted to move it away from RBS?

  • im with natwest / rbs - been with natwest since i left school 1988 ( 20 years ) .. we have a mortgage with natwest .. this all a bit worrying ..

im not sure what to do ? ..
  • It'll make everyone panic, again, for no real reason. Oh, yay.
  • I really wouldn't stress about it to much just yet. The RBS Group are still taking on new staff which is surely a good sign?

Haven't quite a few banks and building societies been downgraded recently? It reflects a sign of the times, not that you should pull all your money out of the bank.

I don't believe the government would let a bank the size of RBS go under anyway. They'd get taken over.
  • Only would panic if HSBC took them over ....

Why, precisely? Not just asking because it's HSBC, but, how would a bank being taken over by a larger, more stable rival be a reason to panic? Not that this whole thing is a reason to panic anyway, of course.
  • Personally I think it would be a bad thing to abandon them for reasons relating to the current financial situation; if they were ditched it would surely facilitate their collapse. Of course, moving for better deals, better customer service, etc, these are all reasons why we tend to be unhappy with our banks and want to do better.

I think as a nation we have short memories. We've been here before, and been through worse...

  • I'm with RBS with a student account (in the black) and a credit card, but I've been planning on cancelling my CC with them since I got my Egg Money card. My OH has been telling me how wonderful the co-operative bank are, and I'm wanting to switch to them, but after hearing the news today I'm tempted to stay with RBS. I feel sorry for them, heh. Not that me staying will help at all, I'd just feel guilty if I cancelled my products and they went under...
