You can get ferries to scandinavia from Hull and Norfolk.
We're going on Eurostar (dead cheap if you book now) then fast train to South Of France I think. Probably stay somewhere a bit quieter and hopefully cheaper than the places I've seen so far!
Whereabouts in the country are you?

yeah, I'd probably recommend Eurostar form eddsfleet or st pancras. we went to Lille in March (£55 each return, and 2hrs away). Not sure what weather will be like at xmas/nye, but gorgeous city and quite family friendly as a lot of it is pedestrianised.
From Lille, the high speed train network gets you to save coast in a few hours, or any of the neighbouring countries (Belgium, Holland, Spain etc.)

My favourite Christmas destination by a very long way is Salzburg, Austria, or just Austria in general. I know plenty of people who have made the journey by rail, car or coach too.
Christmas is still all about family in Austria and my best ever Christmas Eve consisted of visiting the market in the morning, going to an outdoor International carol concert at Oberndorf (where Silent Night) was written and first performed), got back to the city centre just in time for an alp horn concert on the steps of the cathedral (utterly awesome!), back to the hotel for Christmas dinner (which is on Christmas Eve there) and to midnight mass at the cathedral.
Christmas Day was a long walk in the snow and up to the castle.

But if you head over to the Tyrol, many of the villages do midnight ski runs on New Year's Eve by torchlight and it's a spectacular sight. Or there's tobogganing and sleigh rides.

It ain't Disney, but it is the Christmas you dream of.
